Late night viewing curiosity about Americans in wartime China.
Destination Gobi (USA 1953)
Academy Award winner Robert Wise (West Side Story, The Sound of Music, The Sand Pebbles, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Desert Rats) directed this typical early 50's Hollywood WW2 flick about a US Navy meteorological team reporting Chinese weather patterns from Mongolia (!).
Probably very loosely based on SACO (Sino-American Cooperative Organization from WW2).
Richard Widmark (The Bedford Incident), Earl Holliman (The Bridges at Toko-Ri), and Ross Bagdasarian (creator of Alvin & The Chipmunks) are a few of the cast.
Inscrutable double-crossing camel-trading Asians of dubious trustworthiness and villainy are portrayed by Westerners in yellow-face. Richard Loo essays his perennial role as an evil Japanese officer of course.
Check it out.

The Producers (USA 1967)
The Mel Brooks original with Gene Wilder. The 2005 version was not as good--it's a different flavor.
