Yimou's first stab at a wuxia.
I thought it was quite good, actually. :D Of course, I have unfortunately not been able to see Ashes of Time yet, so I probably wouldn't be able to see the differences and the comparisons in that area.

I have to say though that I'm more fond of Kar Wai than Yimou, through it all. WKW appeals and evokes certain emotions. Yimou makes me cry, but WKW movies leave a despondency of sorts. Mono no aware-ish feelings, and they linger...

CTHD and Hero are compared so often because they're the two movies that have been accessible to the masses. They don't have anything else to compare HERO to, other than CTHD because they're the only things most Westerners have seen that are similar, and are Oscar nominated and all that crapola they give us. :D

Tony's performance however, I have to admit, is not up to par. But I didn't think it was that bad, probably because... I don't know. Maybe I got caught up in one thing or another.

I really really liked the pushing curtains scene. It was lovely. Very brief, but I thought it was lovely. And the lake scene, although when you really think about it... it was... a little off tangent.

Now that I look at HERO like that...
I'm a little apprehensive, but I'm trying to put the blinders on again. Hero was beautiful to watch -- aesthetic purposes and things like that. :)
