Awesome essay. Congratulations, wongsaurus.

This is one heavy topic for the holiday season, but it interests me again to give it a second viewing. It gives the reason to review how the most popular American director fared in his drama pieces.

Yes this is one heavy topic for the season and thanks for your kind words of appreciation. The question that you posted certainly had my mental gears once more grinding over this movie which I have given much thought to over the years. I'm glad that my attempt to express some historical perspectives helped your understanding of the movie and has inspired you to explore it again. My thoughts about EOTS are far from complete.

It would be interesting if there some more discussion on other films that touch on the Second World War era in the Pacific as entertainment and pseudo-history. A couple HK ones and Non-Asian ones come to mind, e.g. Kawashima Yoshiko, The Raid, The Last Emperor, and Bridge On The River Kwai. There is also one title not mentioned here but if you go over to the XMAS viewing thread, I will spring it as a surprise on everyone.
