I'm sure he is. And I love his films.

His "Silent Bob" character recurred in many of his films, and Smith likes to employ crude humour in the context of true romance, friendship, and companionship. The humour was cleverly crafted and perfectly timed unlike many other Hollywood wannabe productions. And they always go back to the origin - the people. He's made a style of his own and a style that works. Definitely one of the most remarkable American filmmakers.

His cameo in Live Free Or Die Hard didn't make a lot of sense to me, nor did the entire movie.
